How to install an eSIM on iPhone
4 min read
Installing an eSIM on an iPhone takes about two minutes. You'll need Wi-Fi, the QR code from your order email (or tracking page), and an unlocked iPhone XS or newer.
Installation steps
- 1
Open the QR code on another screen
Display the QR from your order email on a laptop, tablet or second phone so you can scan it with your iPhone's camera.
- 2
Go to Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM
Choose 'Use QR Code' and point the camera at the code. iOS detects it instantly.
- 3
Label the new line
Name it 'Travel' so it's easy to tell apart from your main line. Keep your primary line as default for calls and iMessage.
- 4
Set the eSIM as your data line
Under Cellular Data, select the new Travel line. Leave 'Allow Cellular Data Switching' off to avoid accidental roaming on your home SIM.
- 5
Enable Data Roaming on the eSIM
Tap the Travel line → turn on Data Roaming. Travel eSIMs work through roaming agreements, so this must be on — it doesn't cost extra.
When to install and activate
Install the profile at home on Wi-Fi — the plan's validity usually starts when the eSIM first connects to a network at your destination, not at installation. Check your plan details if unsure.
Common issues
- 'No service' on landing: toggle Airplane Mode for 10 seconds, then manually select a network under Network Selection.
- QR won't scan: use the manual activation code from your order page under 'Enter Details Manually'.
- Profile won't install: confirm the iPhone is carrier-unlocked — Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock should read 'No SIM restrictions'.
- Data very slow: LTE/5G selection can take a few minutes on first connect; try toggling Voice & Data to LTE and back to 5G Auto.
