esim switzerland: networks, prices and roaming rules for 2026
8 min read
An esim switzerland plan gives you mobile data on Swiss networks without a Swiss SIM or ID check. NoKYCsim's Switzerland plans run on Sunrise and Salt, start at $5.30 and need no ID at checkout. EU travellers should check before relying on roaming: Switzerland isn't in the EU, so Roam Like at Home doesn't apply there.
This guide compares esim switzerland options with Swiss SIMs and roaming, explains the three Swiss networks, and covers staying online in the mountains, on trains and near the borders.
It's written by NoKYCsim, which some people find by searching simnokyc. We sell data-only travel eSIMs with no account or ID upload at checkout, and we'll say when roaming or a Swiss SIM is the better deal.
Does EU roaming work in Switzerland?
Not automatically. Switzerland is outside the EU and the EEA, so the EU's Roam Like at Home rules don't cover it. Some EU operators include Switzerland in their bundles anyway; many charge a daily fee or per-MB rates instead.
- EU plans. Check whether your operator lists Switzerland as an included destination. If it doesn't, an esim switzerland plan is usually far cheaper.
- UK plans. UK operators can charge for roaming in Switzerland, as they can in the EU. Check your daily fee before you go.
- US, Canadian, Australian and other plans. Roaming usually means a daily pass or pay-per-MB rates, which add up quickly.
Swiss mobile networks in 2026
Switzerland has three mobile networks: Swisscom, Sunrise and Salt. All three are excellent. In connect's latest network test, published in November 2025, Swisscom scored 983 out of 1,000, Sunrise 975 and Salt 972, and all three were rated outstanding.
Swisscom led on data in trains, Sunrise was slightly ahead in the big cities, and Salt made the biggest gain, mainly from new 5G sites in rural areas.
NoKYCsim's Switzerland plans list Sunrise and Salt, so your phone can connect to whichever of the two is stronger where you are.
Older networks are closing. Sunrise switched off 3G in August 2025 and Swisscom on 31 December 2025, and Salt plans to follow at the end of 2026. Every eSIM phone supports 4G, so this only affects old backup phones.

eSIM vs Swiss SIM vs roaming
Swiss SIMs are good value for long stays, but buying one takes more effort than in most of Europe.
| Option | Best for | Cost | Catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Travel eSIM (NoKYCsim) | Short trips and EU plans that exclude Switzerland | From $5.30 | Data only, with no Swiss number |
| Sunrise prepaid eSIM | Long stays that need a Swiss number | CHF 2.50 per day for unlimited use in Switzerland | Needs an ID upload and a video selfie |
| EU SIM roaming | EU plans that include Switzerland | Depends on your operator | Switzerland is often excluded or charged daily |
| UK or non-EU roaming | Short calls only | Often a daily fee | Can be expensive for data |
Swiss operators are legally required to check ID before activating a prepaid SIM, so a Swiss SIM means showing a passport in a shop or verifying online. A travel eSIM isn't a Swiss SIM. NoKYCsim's checkout doesn't ask for ID, but that isn't an exemption from local rules.

Staying online in the Alps, on trains and near borders
Swiss coverage is strong, but the landscape still affects your signal.
- Mountains. Resorts, cable car stations and main valleys are well covered; remote trails and deep side valleys can lose signal. Download offline maps before a hike.
- Trains and tunnels. Data usually keeps working on SBB trains, but expect short drops in long tunnels.
- Border areas. Near Geneva, Basel, Lugano and Lake Constance, your phone may pick a French, German or Italian network that a Switzerland-only plan doesn't cover. If data stops, select Sunrise or Salt manually in your network settings.
- Hotspot. Sharing data with a laptop uses it far faster, so pick a bigger plan if you work on the road.
How much data do you need in Switzerland?
Maps, train apps and messaging are light on data; video calls, streaming and hotspot use are not. Use these as starting points when you pick an esim switzerland plan.
| Trip | Typical use | Plan |
|---|---|---|
| Zurich or Geneva city break | Maps, messaging and tram apps | 1 GB · 7 days |
| A week of train touring | Timetables, navigation and photos | 3 GB · 15 days |
| Two weeks in the Alps | Hiking maps, weather apps and video calls | 5 GB · 30 days |
| A month or remote work | Daily video calls and a laptop hotspot | 10–20 GB · 30 days |

How to set up your eSIM for Switzerland
Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi, so you have data as soon as you land in Zurich or Geneva.
- 1
Check your phone
It must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. Run our compatible check first.
- 2
Choose a plan
Pick a plan by trip length and data, or a day pass for a stopover.
- 3
Check out without ID
No account or ID upload is needed. Save the secret key if you skip email, and pay with crypto or by card where it's offered.
- 4
- 5
Switch on when you land
Turn on the travel line and set it as your mobile data line. Check the plan's activation note, since validity rules vary.
- 6
Turn off home-line roaming
This matters more in Switzerland than in the EU. Keep your home SIM on for calls and texts if you need them, but turn off its data roaming.
- 7
Get the travel apps
Download the SBB Mobile app for trains, buses and boats, and save offline maps for the mountains.
Travelling beyond Switzerland
Switzerland-only plans work only in Switzerland. If your trip crosses a border, plan for it before you go.
- France, Italy and Germany. All three are in the EU. See our France eSIM, Italy eSIM and Germany eSIM pages for single-country plans.
- Several countries. A Europe eSIM can cover a multi-country trip, but check that its country list includes Switzerland, since some regional plans leave it out.
- Liechtenstein. It has its own plans on NoKYCsim, from $5.57, so check your plan's coverage before you cross.
The bottom line
The best esim switzerland plan is the one that matches your trip: 3 GB for a week, 10 GB for a month, and a day pass for a stopover. Because EU roaming rules don't apply, it's worth buying one even if you travel from the EU, unless your operator includes Switzerland.
